It is quite appropriate that on National Heroes Day — a day dedicated to the celebration of all Filipino heroes and not just those memorialized in statues and history books — a Filipina tennis player pulled off a miraculous comeback to claim victory against one of the best players in the world. Here is how the Manila Bulletin article described it: “Almost given up for the dead after trailing 1-5 in the third set, the 20-year-old Eala displayed nerves of steel against her world No. 15 counterpart by forging a tiebreak before claiming the victory.” Eala’s “heroic win” made her the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam match in the Open era.

Forty-eight years ago, in August, the “ghost month,” I founded C&P Homes after taking out a seven-year loan from a rural bank. I built Camella Homes Phase 1 and 2 with an initial 160 units that sold out to Filipino families, most of whom were families of overseas workers who have saved enough money to build their loved ones the house they have dreamed of for years.

August is indeed an august name for a month that is filled with significant events in Philippine history. That is the reason why the eighth month of the year, in addition to being named as Buwan ng Wika, is also celebrated as History Month. It was the late President Benigno S. Aquino III who proclaimed August as History Month by issuing Proclamation No. 339 in 2012.
